2009 AthletesCAN Forum
Voices of 2010 and Beyond
October 1st - 4th, 2009
Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel
Richmond, BC
The Forum provides the opportunity to bring together Canada’s high performance athletes and sport leaders to network with others, share ideas, learn about the sport system and develop leadership skills through interactive workshops and presentations. The weekend-long event also features the AthletesCAN AGM and board elections.
The 2009 AthletesCAN Forum will focus on the athlete's journey - the experiences, skills and key relationships that have a crucial impact on athletes' careers in sport and as leaders. The Forum promises interactive sessions on engaging topics ranging from how to contribute to or create a positive environment for training and competing, becoming a leader both on and off the field of play, and transitioning out of competitive sport without leaving sport behind. Stayed tuned for more on the 2009 Forum Program in the months to come!AthletesCAN will cover the costs for travel, meals and accommodation for one able-bodied and one disabled athlete representative from each sport to attend the Forum.
KidsCAN School Day is a recent addition to the AthletesCAN Forum. The day is an opportunity for school children in the host community to meet with national team athletes, try a variety of sports and learn about the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles. KidsCAN School Day will be held on October 1, one day before Forum sessions begin.
AthletesCAN’s 4th annual KidsCAN School Day is shaping up to be an exciting opportunity for Richmond youth to experience an Olympic venue along with the company of some of the country’s top high performance athletes. This year, over 1000 Richmond school children will converge on the Richmond Olympic Oval for a day of sport, physical activity and interaction with national team athletes.
The annual AthletesCAN Forum is one of a kind with respect to its inclusiveness and impact on sport development in Canada. It is the greatest opportunity for athlete representatives from all sports to come together and discuss the successes and challenges of sport in Canada. This event is unparalleled in its opportunities for information exchange and education of athletes across Canada. In particular, this event prepares athletes to become leaders in sport and all endeavours they may encounter in their lives.
During my time in Whitehorse I had the privilege to visit local and outlining schools during the KidsCAN School Day and to be quite honest I’m not sure who was more motivated after our visits - the athletes or the students. These visits were some of the most profound speaking engagements I’ve ever had the honour of participating in. My fondest memory was the fact that neither the presenter nor the audience wanted the sessions to end which was most evident at the completion of final visit where we stayed for well over an hour playing indoor soccer with the students. I can’t think of a better way to end any public speaking session as an athlete! - Iain Brambell, Rowing| AthletesCAN Suite 301 - 1376 Bank Street, Ottawa, ON, K1H 7Y3 Phone: (613) 526-4025 Toll Free: 1-888-832-4222 Fax: (613) 526-9735 Email | |
