AthletesCAN congratulates 2009 Canadian Sport Award recipients and nominees

 
February 26, 2009, OTTAWA – AthletesCAN extends congratulations to the 2009 Canadian Sport Award (CSA) recipients and nominees. The awards were held on Tuesday at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, ON.
 
“The CSAs are an important way for the Canadian sport community to recognize outstanding athletes as well as the people and organizations that support sport,” says AthletesCAN Executive Director, Moira Lassen. “Congratulations to all recipients and nominees.” 
 
The Canadian Sport Awards honour our country’s top sport leaders from amateur athletes and coaches to administrators, corporate supporters and volunteers. This annual event celebrates excellence in sport and the leaders who continue to compete and inspire throughout the year.  
 
AthletesCAN would like to congratulate the following recipients:
 
Male Athlete of the Year - Eric Lamaze, Equestrian
Female Athlete of the Year - Chantal Petitclerc, Athletics
Junior Athlete of the Year - Sara Reid, Skeleton
Team of the Year - Men’s Curling Team (Kevin Martin, John Morris, Marc Kennedy, Ben Hebert)
Partners of the Year - Rowing Men’s Eight Team (Jake Wetzel, Kevin Light, Ben Rutledge, Dominic Seiterle, Malcolm Howard, Adam Kreek, Kyle Hamilton, Brian Price, Andrew Byrnes)
Spirit of Sport Story of the Year - Kyle Shewfelt, Artistic Gymnastics
Leadership in Sport Award - Jane Roos
Volunteer Achievement Award - Alain Maillé
Corporate Excellence Award - Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc.
 
Mitsubishi Motors was recognized for their significant contribution to the development of sport through their support of AthletesCAN and Right To Play.

Kyle Shewfelt, male athlete rep for Gymnastics Canada was rewarded for his remarkable journey to Beijing after a life altering injury.
 
“Being recognized with the Spirit of Sport Story of the Year Award is very special to me, especially in the company of so many great athlete leaders”, says Canadian gymnast Kyle Shewfelt. “After breaking both of my legs and fighting with everything I had to get to Beijing, to receive this award is an achievement I will never forget.  I believe this award demonstrates that the term champion is not just reserved for those who win gold medals, but for those who exemplify a true spirit of sport andvalues including dedication, perseverance, sportsmanship, respect for others, and a genuine love of sport.”
