OTTAWA (Dec. 10, 2009) – AthletesCAN is pleased to announce the official launch of the Athletes on Boards online leadership module.
The need to support leadership development of Canada’s athletes has been a long-held priority of the AthletesCAN Board of Directors. Over the years, athletes have become increasingly involved at the decision making table and more specifically at the board level. Through invitation, election or appointment, athletes continue to join boards and high performance committees of numerous national and multi-sport organizations. AthletesCAN has recognized the need to develop a specific toolbox of leadership skills to ensure these athlete representatives are effective leaders for their sport.
Approval for a project to address those concerns was resoundingly supported by delegates at the 2008 AthletesCAN Forum. As a result, a series of leadership development workshops, entitled, “Athletes on Boards” were piloted in August 2009 at the Canada Summer Games and launched at the 2009 AthletesCAN Forum in Richmond, BC.
Now with the official launch of the Athletes on Boards online component, athletes from across Canada can access a wealth of information that takes them from their international circuit to the boardroom. This interactive, searchable online learning tool presents information in a user-friendly manner. From the technical to the tactical, all information is written in the athlete’s voice.
“With the scope of information provided, Canada’s athletes will have the tools they need to make effective decisions on behalf of their team members”, explains Nora Sheffe, president of Sheffe Consulting Inc., the Ottawa-based firm who worked with the AthletesCAN Board and Leadership Committee on the project. “They will also develop the expertise they need to be strategic leaders in any boardroom and in life“.
The next online leadership module, Sport System 101, will be launched in early 2010.
