AthletesCAN Leadership Award
The AthletesCAN Leadership Award was created in 2005 to recognize the contributions of athlete leaders. The award is presented annually to a national team athlete or former national team athlete who has made a significant contribution to sport and to athletes through their involvement as an effective athlete representative, advocate, change agent or bridge builder for athletes within the sport community.
Why nominate
The AthletesCAN Leadership Award celebrates the importance of athlete representatives; honours the successes they have achieved through their work as leaders and change agents; and encourages former athletes to stay connected to the sport community and to make a difference.
Athlete leaders play a crucial role in building a Canadian sport system that is fair, responsive and supportive for Canada’s athletes.

Selection Criteria
- Nominee must be an active or retired Canadian national team athlete
- Nominee must be an athlete representative currently sitting on a national or international board
- Nominee must have made significant contributions to sport and athletes through their involvement as an effective athlete leader, advocate, or as a builder of bridges for athletes within their sport community
Note: Nominations may be submitted by anyone and individuals may nominate themselves
Nominations must include:
- Completed nomination form
- A resume of athlete leadership and/or advocacy contributions
- Two 500-1,000 word letters of support documenting the impact of the nominee’s leadership and/or advocacy from the following: nominator, NSO, MSO, athlete, fellow board member
Selection Committee
The selection committee is comprised of AthletesCAN Board Members and previous AthletesCAN Leadership Award winners.
Selection Process
- All complete nominations submitted by the deadline will be considered
- Nominations will be reviewed individually by all members of the selection committee
- One winner will be selected
- The winner will be flown to the AthletesCAN Athletes Forum held in late September / early October
